Young persons and digital future: a cross-section challenge

Because of the discussions on the Platform http://www.diskutiere.de a conference about the topic "Are the young good enough prepared for the digital future?" was held in the O2 Tower in Munich on the 25th of June. The Initiators of this campaign Telefónica O2 Germany1 und UPJ2 presented first results of the online discussion. The participants of the symposium who discussed about these results were Professor Dr. Lutz Frühbrodt from the University of applied science Würzburg, Dr. Florain Hermann,MdL, member of the data protection commission of the Bavaria Parliament, Jutta Croll, director oft the Stiftung Digitale Chancen (Digital Opportunities Fundation) and André Krause, Managing Director Finance by Telefónica O2 Germany.

The debate between the number of participants who took part online and on the conference showed that media competence of the youth has to be advanced. This means the integration of media competence in school, further training for teacher and the legal restraint of the federal states with regard to media lessons. Altogether this is a cross-section challenge.

Dr. Florain Hermann,MdL, member of the data protection commission of the Bavaria Parliament has the opinion that politicians has to interfere in case of risks that occur by using new technologies. Also he says that the topic Digital Divide has to be covered because of the aim to bring broadband Internet access to all. Jutta Croll, director of the Stiftung Digitale Chancen (Digital Opportunities Fundation) explains that the challenge is to conciliate the technical skills and the media behavior of young persons

The Experts who attended the conference came to the result that new technologies are bringing some problems. First of all parents and teachers often have less experiences with regard to using new media and this fact restrains the young from learning a suggestive way of using new technologies. Therefore everyone in the youth work but also companies and politicians are responsible for improving the media competence of young persons.
