APEC-OECD Symposium on initiatives promoting a safer Internet environment for children

Date:
15.04.09
Organisation:
APEC & OECD
Location:
Singapore

Ensuring a safe and secure ICT environment and protecting children is a concern shared by OECD countries and non member economies. In the Seoul Declaration on the Future of the Internet Economy, ministers agreed to "encourage collaboration between governments, the private sector, civil society and the Internet technical community in building an understanding of the impact of the Internet on minors in order to enhance their protection and support when using the Internet". They also agreed to "increase cross-border co-operation of governments and enforcement authorities in the areas of improving cyber-security, combating spam, as well as protecting privacy, consumers and minors".

At the 25th Working Party on Information Security and Privacy (WPISP) meeting, delegates agreed that experts from OECD Member countries share policy agendas and best practices for protecting children from risks related to their use of the Internet and more generally ICTs, including security and privacy as well as illegal or harmful online contents. They also agreed to join forces with the APEC TEL Security and Prosperity Steering Group (SPSG) to hold a joint Symposium on initiatives among Member economies promoting a safer Internet environment for children. The joint APEC-OECD Symposium, to take place in Singapore on 15 April 2009, will foster an exchange of best practices across regions.

The information gathered at the Symposium will be useful in implementing the Seoul Ministerial mandate. It will help in developing at a later stage a synthesis and analytical report on current risks to children in the cyberspace, on national and international policies to address these risks, and in identifying gaps to be filled.

More details on the Agenda of the meeting and the logistics will be provided at a later stage.
