Protecting children using the internetPublic presentation
- European Economic and Social Committee (EESC)
- Brussels, Belgium
The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) is organising on 5 May 2009 a public presentation on protecting children from harmful content and conduct online. The issue of child protection in regards to online technologies is of major and continuing concern to policy- and law-makers, the wider ICT industry and its end-users. In spring 2008, the EESC unanimously adopted its most recent of several opinions on this topic [opinion CESE 986/2008 (TEN/343) on "Protecting children using the internet" - rapporteur Ms M. Sharma (Group I, "Employers" - UK)].
With this opinion the Committee supported the Commission's proposal for a relevant multi-annual Community programme ("The Safer Internet Programme 2009-2013"), which was in turn adopted by the European Parliament and the Council in late 2008.
The public presentation on "Protecting children using the internet" will take place on the afternoon of Tuesday, 5 May 2009, at the EESC headquarters in Brussels (Jacques Delors building, Rue Belliard 99-101, room JDE 52) and will be followed by a cocktail reception at the Atrium on the 6th floor of the same building. Due to the limited seats available, early registration is essential and requests will be served on a "first come-first served" basis.
