The firms - Verizon, Sprint and Time Warner Cable - three of the biggest US Internet service providers have agreed to block access to websites that display images of child sex abuse. Pedophiles cannot access from these providers in the USA to respective sites with such content. Furthermore specific news groups for exchange of such images are blocked by these companies as well.
The agreement was a result of negotiations by New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo. Previous efforts to combat child pornography have been resisted by the industry. Internet companies argued that they could not be held responsible for online communication between individuals. Law enforcement agencies therefore focused on targeting the producers of images of child pornography rather than the ISPs.
