Every fourth young user puts personal information online

The German Association for Information Technology, Telecommunications and New Media (BITKOM) released a new survey revealing that data protection is of great importance for the consumers trust and the economic success of digital technologies. The self-determination of the consumer in handling their personal data must be strengthened; the protection of personal data is an important topic for politics and economics, so Federal Minister Ilse Aigner.

Referring to the survey, 23% of the user put personal data like profiles, opinions, ideas and pictures online. One year ago, only 18% did so. Even 62% of the users aged under 29 publish their personal data, most likely within the social networking sites.

Many websites scan user data: 61% gave out their names and addresses, 38% their bank details, profession or hobbies. But not everybody undertakes protective measures: only 28% of the user gave such personal data away but did not read the data protection policy of the website provider. Even every third user passes on without adjusting the data protection settings, provided by the service providers.
