Many scientific studies deal with the effects of audio-visual media on young people and adults. A new expert review was conducted by the Fachhochschule Nordwestschweiz on behalf of the Bundesamt für Sozialversicherungen (BSV) der Schweizerischen Eidgenossenschaft.
The report New Media and Violence is part of the thesis, that the consumption of violence in the media is related to violent behaviour of young people in Switzerland. Last week an initiative was brought in to the Swiss Federal Convention; this initiative aims at passing a law, which shall forbid to produce, advertise, import, trade or pass on computer games, containing brutal violence against human beings, which conduce to the success of the game.
Before it comes to legislative changes, the Swiss Federal Council has commissioned a study, to determine to which degree violent media content effect young people actually. Therefore another study was conducted on behalf of the Bundesamt für Sozialversicherungen (BSV) der Schweizerischen Eidgenossenschaft called Youth violence prevention. While this report comes to the conclusion that there is not enough knowledge, which countermeasures actually exist to prevent youth violence, the report New Media and Violence summarises that the consumption of violence alone not cause violence, but if other problematic life and environmental factors come together, it can be indeed be an increased danger.
