The purpose of the Forum des droits sur l’internet is to elaborate rules on Internet use, in various fields such as e-commerce, online administration, e-vote, e-mail and forums of discussion etc. The Forum is a space for reflection and action tending towards the development of a civic Internet. On the basis of the debates that it organises and the conclusions of its working groups, the Forum puts forward recommendations for decisions made by public and private actors.

There are more than 70 members in the Forum des droits sur l'internet (associations, public organisations and private companies). These members are divided into two groups, the groups of 'professionals' and the group of 'users'. Some actors take part in the two authorities of the Forum: the Supervisory Board and the Executive Board.

The Forum des droits sur l'internet has four missions:

  • To organise consultation between state representatives and private actors on Internet contents and services
  • To develop public information and awareness
  • To propose an online dispute resolution service to solve disputes related to the internet
  • To cooperate with a network of international correspondents
Since its creation, the Forum has made 24 recommendations on topics like Internet and labour relations, e-administration, responsibility (hypertext links, forums of discussion), child protection, online advertising, ethics label for ISP, e-commerce, online games etc.
